A female veteran in Wisconsin reached out because she had nowhere to go. She was sleeping in her car, and she did not feel safe.
As soon as we heard from her, the calls started. Madison. Milwaukee. Every veteran resource we could think of — VFW posts, Vet Centers, VA hospitals, shelter networks, and advocacy groups.
What we found was tough.
It is much harder for female veterans to find safe housing in Wisconsin than most people realize.
Most veteran housing was built decades ago for men. Many shelters have no dedicated beds for women. Some cannot take women with children. Others have wait lists that stretch weeks. For a female veteran sleeping in her car with severe weather coming, waiting was not an option.
With severe weather on the way, waiting for a bed to open up could have cost her her life.
At Reward Our Heroes, we could not just wait and hope something opened up. We stepped in and awarded an emergency housing grant through the Reward Our Heroes Foundation so she had a safe place to stay immediately.
No veteran should ever feel like they have no options.
We can do better in Wisconsin. Especially for our female veterans.
This grant kept one veteran safe on one hard night. But the bigger problem — the gap in safe, gender-specific housing for women who served — does not go away when the weather clears.
